Fasting glucose values which are higher than 6.1 indicate abnormal glucose (fasting glucose tolerance injury), while higher than 7.8 (or 7.0) indicate a diabetic state. However, for type 1 diabetics and type 2 diabetics with insulin injections, fasting glucose misses an overall representative significance; instead representing glucose at that particular moment. For the patients with dawn phenomenon, confusion may result if you judge only by fasting glucose.
